Nashville, Tennessee. 1862. Kate is no longer sure that she wants to stay with her husband, let alone her snobby in-laws, when suddenly they are all turned out of their rich house in town. Penniless, they descend on Kate’s relatively poor mother, who lives in the country and is harboring a secret of her own. The book brings the problems of the Civil War to life, as the characters deal with the inconvenience of living in a small house packed as tight as sardines. They have to grow their own food, keep it from being confiscated, cook it and store it. Some nurse and others doctor, trying to get by in difficult times. Blackburn weaves a rich and often downright humorous tapestry, showing the plight and paths of the fallen, the imposed upon, and those who sympathize with the North and those who are devoted to the South. The Doctor Daughter The Choice edition by Belle Blackburn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A great sequel to The Doctor's Daughter Journey to Justice. The characters are well written with plenty of historical facts about the war and Nashville's occupation. The author did lots of research on medical practices during that time. I will miss Kate and the others as I grew to love each one. Well worth reading!
Loved this one and could not put it down. I related to the characters as my family. It was just one of the books I will always remember and I miss the characters already. the facts about the civil war and how it affected both the north and the south really put the war in perspective for both sides.
A wonderful book.
Belle Blackburn caught her stride with this sequel. She artfully includes the linguistics of Civil War Nashville into the lives of her characters. You can smell the the old farmhouse as she paints vivid pictures of cramped rural life, eking out a living near Nashville while attempting to remain out of sight of the Yankee intruders. This is not just a great story, its a great compilation of numerous stories woven together by a master craftsman. Belle Blackburn is an author to watch.
I read both her books Doctor's Daughter Justice & the Choice. Because I read them immediately after each other I found the story intriguing and funny. I feel the writer wrote with her tongue in cheek as she described some of the things that happen in the lives of Kate's family
Oh, my! Kate really takes her readers on an adventure packed time. This book is a sequel but is a stand on its own story. Kate's wealthy new family is forced out of their Nashville home by the Yankees and end up moving in with Kate's mom. From their humble adjustments to life on the farm and to the war, the reader will learn of so many ways to survive. But, will they all survive? And why did Granny say you always bury someone face down?
This book starts with a great cover for the subject and ends with a great quote for the plans. You will be cheating yourself if you do not read the first book THE DOCTOR'S DAUGHTER JOURNEY TO JUSTICE first. THE CHOICE can stand alone but having the background from the first book enhances the experience greatly. Don't miss reading the Glossary of 1800's slang immediately following the cover. Starting where calls the beginning causes you to miss this as well as the Nashville street names in 1862 vs today.
All of the other reviewers describe enough of the story, one at least way too much, so I will not. There is no doubt you will enjoy the story, the characters, and the serious and humorous situations. As you read think of the amount of research Belle Blackburn had to do to very accurately describe Civil War History in Nashville but also to accurately depict characters and thinking from that time. Between the two books due to Belle's research you will learn about barn raising, quilting bees with their interesting and sometimes hilarious conversations, hog killing time, preparing a chicken dinner from live chicken to the stomach, buck dancing, birthing of a baby and of a calf, farming the way it was done then. It is all well weaved into an interesting story and the subplots.
In other words - READ HER BOOKS. You will be rewarded
I loved this book!! My only disappointment in this book is…it ended!! I read ‘The Doctor’s Daughter Journey to Justice’ about a year ago and could not wait for the sequel. I decided to re-read ‘The Doctor’s Daughter Journey to Justice’ and was able to immediately begin reading ‘The Doctor’s Daughter The Choice’. Excellent decision for me! I do not enjoy war books but the author was able to include the tragedy of the Civil War without the details being offensive! The author is very talented in making her characters come alive. Since finishing the book, I have truly missed experiencing their journey! I hope the author receives noteworthy coverage and that there are many more books to come in ‘The Doctor’s Daughter’ journey!
